The Barnabas Chronicle: SEVBC, IBL and Family Update – Summer 2014

Barnabas Chronicle                                                                Ministry Report from Dr. Joel Tetreau

May 2014

Again we take the time to communicate about the Lord’s work both at Southeast Valley Baptist Church (SVBC) and with the western region of the Institute of Biblical Leadership (IBL West). This note is to give you an update on the ebb and flow of our ministry as we come into the summer months of 2014.

These are good days at the Tetreau home. My precious wife and partner in life and ministry, Toni, has just finished her 23rd year of piano teaching. Humanly speaking, I would not be able to accomplish anything without Toni’s support. She is the air that I breathe! The Lord has enabled Toni to take about ten weeks off during the summer break. That allows her to get caught up on a myriad of personal and family details, paper-work, minutia, as well as to spend extra time with her boys (all four of them!). Our sons continue to live active lives. Jeremy (number 2) just graduated from High School and will be on his way to Liberty University to study government and political studies in August. Jonathan (our eldest) just finished his sophomore year at Arizona State studying technology, science and society and is already enjoying time away from his studies. Joshua, our youngest, will be a high school junior in the fall and will spend his summer working on his guitar and picking up odd jobs here and there. All three of our sons are active with us in ministry and we are grateful for their continued love for our Lord. We as a family are looking forward to a couple of trips this summer for resting and recharging. These are precious times for us because we know that Lord willing in the coming years the boys will be flying out of the nest! (Which is sad…..and wonderful! :)

As I reflect on the state of life and ministry, I am thankful for the Lord’s strength. We have just come through an intensely busy season both at SVBC ( and IBL West ( Wipf and Stock Publishers continue to see copies of my recently released book being purchased (“The Pyramid and the Box: The Decision-Making Process in a Local New Testament Church”). I am thankful that several leaders have commented to me about how “The Pyramid and the Box” has been a help to them in ministry. On the church side we have entered a season of transition as one of our pastors and several families have left our assembly and have planted a new ministry. Anytime you lose key leaders it is a strain for a ministry to identify, train and release new helpers in the life of the congregation but by God’s grace that has and continues to happen. We have just added two pastoral interns who essentially give us a pastoral team of four – two elders and two elders in preparation. (Actually the two associate elders – Pastor Jesse and Pastor Russ are already functioning effectively as shepherds.) Pastor Gary Davis continues to serve our congregation as well as serving me as one of my dearest friends in the ministry. Our church calendar has been jammed with important ministry since February so now our congregation will take a collective pause for a few months so that we can rest, escape the heat and re-group for the start of the ministry calendar which coincides with the beginning of the school year.

SVBC continues to share me on the average of four days a month, with a dear ministry that God has raised up to come alongside of leaders and the ministries that they serve. I continue to serve IBL (Institute of Biblical Leadership) as the regional coordinator of IBL West. Our western zone has been busy, to say the least. Furthermore a few of my IBL “gigs” have taken me out of the West geographically. As I write this I am aboard a large A380 Airbus headed to Australia and New Zealand with my son Jeremy. We will preach and minister to at least five different congregations. Additionally we will lead a five-day IBL leadership seminar. This trip will take us three weeks. A few weeks ago it was thrill to preach to over 1,000 people south of Monterrey, Mexico. We were working with future leaders connected to a Christian College as well as dozens of churches and enjoying a gospel ministry that saw numbers of individuals come to faith in Christ. A week or so before that we celebrated twenty-five years of faithful ministry near IBL headquarters in North Carolina. On top of these opportunities, there has been crises response work with several ministries as well as continual counseling and coaching opportunities with several choice leaders in ministry. Finally, as we look forward to the months to come we are excited about several leadership seminars here in the west and one in the mid-west (Grand Rapids, Michigan in October).

Thank you for your prayers. Please pray for IBL West as we are in need of more financial support to continue this ministry. Would you prayerfully consider partnering with us for monthly support? Perhaps you could give a one-time gift? Thank you to our friends who currently support us and those friends who have blessed us with financial help in the past. Please notice the brochure with this letter. If the Lord leads you to join our support team, please fill out the form and send it in to the address on the form. If you don’t want to mess with that just let me know by way of a note or a phone call.

If you cannot give, please continue to pray. You cannot know what your friendship and prayers mean to us. As several of us like to say at IBL…..Straight Ahead!

Your friend!
