The Barnabas Chronicle: SEVBC Update

An update on the ministry of Dr. Joel Tetreau and his connection with Southeast Valley Baptist Church (www.sevbc.org) and IBL West (Institute of Biblical Leadership – www.iblministry.com).

We once again share through our blog, Straight Ahead! My apologies, for it has been a while since the blog was active. We tried to communicate through a few other venues but have decided to come back to the blog here on the SVBC web page. I want to thank Emily Conley for help with editing.

My earliest mentor in ministry (other than my parents) was Dr. James Singleton. “Doc” was the founder of Tri-City Baptist Church and he was centrally instrumental in the planting of Southeast Valley Baptist Church, doing much of the foundational work a year and a half before Toni and I moved from Minnesota to take over the leadership of SVBC. Doc often quoted from Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” I love this passage.

The first thing we note about this passage is that God has His part and we have our part in accomplishing tasks. That is true even when we face “problem solving.” So, this summer we have been thinking of both this verse and the first six chapters of Nehemiah (the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem). We’ve been looking at the topic of “Solving Problems Biblically,” looking at the applications and implications of the leadership of Nehemiah. Prior to this sermon series, we did a sermon series based out of the book of Ephesians dealing with “The Christian Home.” Additionally, I’ve given the teens and adult teaching staff the summer off by teaching a combined Sunday School class looking at Church History.

A significant blessing this summer was the publishing of my book, The Pyramid and the Box: The Decision-Making Process in a local New Testament Church by Wipf and Stock publishers in Eugene, Oregon under their “Resource Publication” line (www.wipfandstock.com). The book is being featured this month as one of Resource Publications “featured books” on their web page. You can order the book from them, or from Amazon (including an “e-book” edition). If you would like a personalized signature and a note of thanks and appreciation, contact me personally (jtetreau@cox.net).

The book attempts to answer three important questions about decision-making in a congregation – “What is decision-making in a congregation?”, “Who are the decision-makers?”, and “How do you effectively accomplish decision-making?” My prayer is that this will not only be a help to our congregation here in Gilbert, but also, in light of my work as regional coordinator with IBL West, it may be a tool to help leaders and their ministries around the globe. To that end, I’m in the process of trying to raise enough money for 500 copies of my book so that I can send those to men I have trained in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, etc. Thanks to those who have helped or might yet help this project with a financial gift.

As we start our ministry calendar year (beginning in September after Labor Day) we are thrilled for a host of new families that have joined or started attending regularly here at SVBC. On Sunday Sept 8th, we met with more than a dozen of these families for a “welcome to the church family” luncheon with various small group, Sunday School, and other ministry leaders. Coupled with our faithful families that have been with us for years, we are excited about what the Lord has for us in the coming months and years ahead.

With the start of the ministry year, we kick off again our choir season. Our director, Mrs. Toni Tetreau, extends an invitation to any of you who love to sing and might be willing to join the choir each week.

Another highlight of the summer was our interaction with Grand View Camp near Alpine, AZ. Grand View Camp is getting closer and closer to being able to open their new facilities just North of Eager, AZ. Pastor Roger Geiger was able to spend several weeks helping Grand View wrap up some significant work projects with the help of volunteers from SVBC and other like-minded churches.

Looking ahead in the coming months, Sunday September 15th, two new classes start. First, Pastor Gary Davis and Mr. Mark Buennagel will teach a Sunday School class together. Mark will focus on the doctrine and practice of “servant hood” and Pastor Gary will lead us through the Biblical teaching of Eternal Security. Pastor Roger Geiger will teach a second class focusing on practical and biblical principles of parenting.

This will be the last class taught by Pastor Roger before leaving SVBC to plant a sister church somewhere in the East Valley. Roger and Tammy have determined it is God’s will that in early March they will launch a new congregation where Roger will serve as lead pastor. We are grateful for the work that Roger and Tammy have done over the years in connection to our ministry here at SVBC. It is our desire to greatly encourage and help Roger and Tammy as they launch this new work.

We look forward to our fall line-up of ministry. A few special events and Sunday’s coming up are:

  1. The Men and Boy’s Camping Trip at Woods Canyon Lake, September 19-21st.
  2. Revival Sunday & Evangelism Sunday, October 6 and 13th : Two Sunday special meetings with Evangelist Monte Leavell. We will have a church –wide special season of prayer from Friday evening, October 4th, until Saturday evening October 5th, asking the church family to have a special dedicated time slot to pray for the upcoming special meetings. We are calling this a “Sabbath Prayer” taken from the OT pattern of setting aside a special season of prayer from Friday sun-down to Saturday sun-down.
  3. Thursday through Saturday, October 24-26, our ladies will enjoy a two day ladies retreat near Payson.
  4. Sunday, November 10th ,we are planning a significant celebration on Veteran’s Day Sunday.
  5. We will have a “Harvest Fest Sunday” for November 24. We will enjoy a thanksgiving lunch together after the service and we will have a special mission offering to help cover the cost of a special mission’s project.

Coming into December and the cooler months of the year, we look forward to various Christmas and New Years celebrations. We also will enjoy our annual hayride (date, time and place to be announced).
