Introduction – So over the years I have stated publicly I believe in a historic fundamentalism not a hysteric fundamentalism. To many on the outside (and to many of us on the inside) there is a real struggle to understand where one ends and the other begins! So while I seldom use the word with people who cannot appreciate the context of it, I still appreciate the idea behind what we mean by “fundamentalism.” In one of the more recent editions of Voice, I noted and appreciated very much the thoughts behind Gary Gilley and his article entitled, “Thinking About Legalism” (March/April 2017, 18-19).  I like Gary’s use of the distinction between “Cultural” and “Biblical” fundamentalism. While we reflect on 500 years of reformation let me note that I am also indebted to the ideas of “Reformation Theology.” I’m not sure how one can say he is historically a fundamentalist without also having a great appreciation for the ideas of “Grace alone,” Scripture alone,” “Faith alone,” Christ alone” for “God’s glory alone.” I am extremely thankful for the strength and ministry accomplished by the likes of Huss, Luther, Calvin, Zwingli and Knox (to name but a few).  Let me also say I am very much a dispensationalist in the classic sense. I continue to see two peoples of God divided between “Church” and “Israel.” God is not confused. Promises He makes to one will be fulfilled to that same one. Promises made to the other will be fulfilled to the other. I understand that there is a different essence between the “Mosaic Law” and the “Law of Christ” as it is mitigated in the “New Covenant” for the Church. My “dispensationalism” bleeds a bit in that I see an aspect of the Kingdom of God that is “already” as well as aspects that are, “not yet.” Having said that I see both some continuity and some discontinuity between the testaments. They meet together in the New Covenant where the eschatological promises to Israel are joined with the soteriological promises for the Church in one new and better covenant (as clearly spelled out by the author of Hebrews). The result of all of that is that New Testament saints are the spiritual descendants of Abraham!

Winter 2016/2017

Dear Family/Friends,

Happy New Year from Joel and Toni Tetreau. The Barnabas Chronicle is our attempt to communicate the latest happenings from our family, Southeast Valley Bible Church and IBL West (Institute of Biblical Leadership). What a year 2016 was. For our family the year was monumental. Jonathan (our eldest son) not only finished his Bachelor’s degree at ASU, but he married his sweetheart Brittany. Jeremy (our middle son) is now a junior and is enjoying his studies at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Joshua (our youngest son) lives at home and is studying education at ASU. All three of our sons continue to be very involved in the Lord’s work for which we are thankful. We are also thankful for a blessed year in the Tetreau home. God allowed us to convert Toni’s old piano studio into a small apartment for visiting relatives and guests. Along with that, we were able to build into our home a new piano studio. We were also able to take a couple of enjoyable trips as a family and as a couple. Toni and I celebrated 25 years of marriage in part by driving across the country back in the summer to deliver Jeremy’s car to him. He and his younger brother Joshua were working at a Christian camp in New York. We saw family and friends along the journey as well as several New England states that Toni had never visited.

Spring 2016

AZ Greetings from Joel and Toni Tetreau! As we come into the spring months of the year, we pray this note finds you well. Frankly to say we have come into a busy season in our life would be an “under-statement.” As many of you know our family is facing a full-cup of transition. We just now are finishing building a new music studio for Toni. We took the old studio and connected it with our guest bedroom and turned it into a guest suite with a small living room and new kitchenette. This will help us keep loved-ones and visiting guests in the years to come. Our eldest son Jonathan and his fiancée Britney will be wed on May 28, right after Jonathan graduates from Arizona State University. Jonathan continues to work at an Italian restaurant in Gilbert while at the same time he works an internship at CBS radio in Phoenix. Also in May, our youngest son Joshua will be finishing high school. Joshua placed first chair in the east valley music regionals and now has made it to the all-state choir. Jeremy, our middle son has a real possibility of increased responsibility both in his summer ministry in up-state New York as well as on the campus of Liberty University for his upcoming junior year. Additionally, Jeremy has found a fantastic church in Lynchburg where he serves during the school year. Jonathan and Joshua continue to make a real impact in ministry with us at SVBC. We are thankful for our sons and the young men of faith they have grown to be.

Ministry Report from Dr. Joel Tetreau

November 2014                                          Ministry Leadership in the West

Greetings to you from Dr. Joel and Toni Tetreau and our three sons Jonathan, Jeremy and Joshua; greetings also from Southeast Valley Baptist Church in Gilbert, Arizona and IBL West (Institute of Biblical Leadership – Western Region). I pray this note finds you well. Many of us love this time of the year. There is something special about the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year portion of the calendar year. For many of us, this is a time of reflection; a consideration for what we have and how God has blessed us – especially we who are called by His Son’s name. As Christians, Thanksgiving and especially Christmas are meaningful to us as we consider the gift of Jesus and our personal benefits from the incarnation. The Barnabas Chronicle: IBL and Family Update

In addition to serving as lead pastor here at Southeast Valley Baptist Church (read the church update here), it is also my privilege to serve as the Western regional coordinator of IBL (Institute of Biblical Leadership). My primary territory is marked from Montana, south to New Mexico and everything west of that (including Alaska and Hawaii). At IBL we primarily focus on 5 different missions. Those include the following:

The Barnabas Chronicle: SEVBC Update

An update on the ministry of Dr. Joel Tetreau and his connection with Southeast Valley Baptist Church (www.sevbc.org) and IBL West (Institute of Biblical Leadership – www.iblministry.com).

We once again share through our blog, Straight Ahead! My apologies, for it has been a while since the blog was active. We tried to communicate through a few other venues but have decided to come back to the blog here on the SVBC web page. I want to thank Emily Conley for help with editing.

My earliest mentor in ministry (other than my parents) was Dr. James Singleton. “Doc” was the founder of Tri-City Baptist Church and he was centrally instrumental in the planting of Southeast Valley Baptist Church, doing much of the foundational work a year and a half before Toni and I moved from Minnesota to take over the leadership of SVBC. Doc often quoted from Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” I love this passage.
